PRESCHOOL/PRE-K  |  FAITH CHRISTIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ROANOKE, VA

For many families, preschool is the beginning of their children's educational journey in school. Our dedicated Junior Kindergarten teachers feel that it is in preschool/junior kindergarten that love of learning, curiosity, and wonder can best be instilled. At Faith Christian School, we encourage each preschool/junior kindergarten student to explore, discover, and wonder,
which is the basis for a life-long love of learning.

Inspiring Life-Long Love For Learning

The foundation of a love for learning, our preschool teachers:

  • Invite students to ask endless questions, laying good question-asking skills by giving them prompts such as "I wonder..."

  • Provide opportunity to explore God's world with their minds, hearts, fingers, and even toes!

  • Engage students in thinking through and talking about what they have discovered and what it means to them.

Additionally, students learn to participate in classroom activity, preparing them for the next grades. For example:

  • Students learn to raise their hand and patiently wait to be called on before they contribute to the discussion, in preparation for civil discussion and debate in the upper grades.

  • Students learn to get along with peers and compromise or problem-solve with others on the playground during recess—skills vital for healthy relationships in school, work, and life.

  • Students learn to keep their school material organized, to take homework home, complete on their own (as much as able), and bring completed homework back to school, setting good habits they will continue to use for the rest of their lives.

Preschool/Junior Kindergarten Curriculum

At Faith Christian School, we help our junior kindergarten students explore and discover their world, focusing particularly in exploration through play (play-based learning), establishing habits of organization and memorization, encouraging independence, and fostering wonder that leads to learning.

Play-Based Learning: Preschool/Junior Kindergarten students will learn through playing in the dirt (Nature Studies), playing with their friends (social interactions), playing in Physical Education (motor development) as well as developing skills in using learning tools, art supplies, and musical instruments.

Habits Of Organization: Preschool/Junior Kindergarten students will learn how to organize their backpacks and personal spaces, how to unpack lunches, how to put away toys and learning tools after playing with them (and before getting out another), how to line up, and more.

Habits Of Memorization: Preschool/Junior Kindergarten students will learn all their ABCs and the different sounds they make in preparation for reading in future grades, discuss numbers, as well as learn and recite songs and Bible verses.

Encouraging Independence: Students are encouraged toward independence, beginning in preschool/junior kindergarten. This includes managing their own personal items (backpacks, lunch items, homework folders, etc.), managing their time, and more. Recitation is also a significant part of encouraging independence and confidence their own abilities.

Fostering Wonder: As Preschool/Junior Kindergarten students explore science, history, literature, and art, they observe the world around them, wonder at the universe that God has created, and discover how they can interact with it.

Visiting any school will provide the clearest picture of how to answer the question all parents must ask: “Which school presents the greatest prospects for helping my children become all God intended them to be?” And while college is a long way off, you can explore the results our alumni have experienced and how a classical Christian Education better prepares students for life.
