Possibly the most important year of your child's life.

KINDERGARTEN  |  FAITH CHRISTIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ROANOKE, VA

For many children, kindergarten is the beginning of their educational journey in school. Our dedicated Kindergarten teachers feel that it is the most important school year of a child's life. At Faith Christian School, we provide each Kindergarten student with an opportunity to learn and practice many essential social, emotional, problem-solving, observation, and study skills that they will use throughout their life, including skills in phonics, math, Bible, history, and science. Our passionate teachers encourage each child to explore, learn, and celebrate as they grow, which instills a love of learning, an attitude of awe and wonder as they explore, and a confidence to use their skills to solve problems.

Learning To Love Learning!

Kindergarten students join Faith Christian School from many backgrounds and levels of academic experience.

Some students have been to a pre-kindergarten while others may have been homeschooled by their parents. Some have learned their letters and sounds, while some have not—some come to us already reading!

Our wonderful, passionate Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Anderson, has been teaching Kindergarten for over 14 years at Faith Christian School. Her experience teaching, approach to making learning fun, and our smaller class size allow her to deeply know each student. Together with her gracious assistant, Mrs. Farthing, they provide the individualized attention necessary to call out the natural talents of the individual student, challenging those who excel in one area while encouraging them in the areas still developing.

Additionally, our Kindergarten students are supported by fun teachers who bring in music and art or get them out of the classroom into the library and outdoors in nature studies. These teachers are a vital part of developing each student holistically, teaching them to wonder, explore, and ask good questions—all aspects of someone who loves to learn!

Get The Foundation Right And Greatness Will Follow

For many children, kindergarten is the first time students learn several lessons necessary for a fulfilling life:

  • Students learn to raise their hand and patiently wait to be called on before they contribute to the discussion, in preparation for civil discussion and debate in the upper grades.

  • Students learn to complete assignments in a certain amount of time while still giving their best, in preparation for more arduous assignments each grade level brings.

  • Students learn to get along with peers and compromise or problem-solve with others on the playground during recess—skills vital for healthy relationships in school, work, and life.

  • Students learn to keep their school material organized, to take homework home, complete on their own (as much as able), and bring completed homework back to school, setting good habits they will continue to use for the rest of their lives.

Kindergarten is a year to lay a firm educational foundation on which to build the rest of learning. This foundation—as any foundation—needs to be solid, without cracks or weaknesses.

Kindergarten Curriculum

At Faith Christian School, we help kindergarten students build a solid academic foundation, focusing particularly in phonics, math, and the Bible.

Phonics: Kindergarten students will learn all the sounds of the alphabet letters, many multi-letter phonograms, recognize sight-words, learn to read many easy-to-read books as well as hear many good books read to them.

Math: Students will be exposed to Singapore math manipulatives and math games to develop a love for math. They will also discuss mathematical concepts so that may develop a "math vocabulary."  This ensures they will not only know the correct answer to math questions, but they will be able to tell you why it is the correct answer.

Bible: Kindergarteners will not only become more familiar with the Bible stories but will become more confident in their abilities as they stand before the class to recite Bible verses. (Memorization and recitation are two vital components of our kindergarten curriculum as they prepare the students for later grades.)

Science and history are also part of our kindergarten curriculum so a student will learn about and observe the world around them, wonder at the universe that God has created, and discover how they can interact with it.

Visiting any school will provide the clearest picture of how to answer the question all parents must ask: “Which school presents the greatest prospects for helping my children become all God intended them to be?” For more information on how our teaching methods bring out the best in students, come for a visit!
