We are excited to announce that for our 17th year of Project Faith ~ an all-school fundraiser and service project ~ on Friday, April 27th, that we will be making improvements at Roanoke County's Explore Park - a 1,100-acre passive recreation facility. Our 600 volunteers will be landscaping common areas, painting and staining fences and gates, building picnic tables and benches, cleaning up trails and so much more. Explore Park, which features hundreds of acres of pristine woodlands, hiking and biking trails, river frontage, and a visitor center, is used by many schools, churches, scout groups, and families. The park offers a variety of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the beauty of our area, and appreciate God's creation, and makes a positive impact on the quality of life in the Roanoke Valley. Each year, we choose a verse to align with our work. This year's verse is:

1 Peter 4:10- "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."

We were also excited to introduce our Project Manager Teams, parent volunteers and alumni who have already been hard at work on Project Faith for months. Each of these teams have certain grade levels assigned to them as split up our work on Project Faith Day. You will be hearing from your Project Managers via email in the weeks to come with much more specific details about what you will be doing that day and other details you need to know.   Our team includes:

  • Chair, Stacey Lilley
  • Team Julie Sessor and Anne Hearp
  • Team Laura Powell and Shelley Sawyer
  • Team Heather Matthews and Ann Claire Shepherd
  • Team Rachel Pasley and Katy Eng
  • Logistics Managers Waid Powell and Alumni Brett Jones

Additionally, we have around 20 students, highly selected Junior and Seniors, to assist the teams through the Project Faith Secret Society or PFSS.   This group was created a few years ago for juniors and seniors to have the opportunity to serve alongside Project Managers to guide students and parents at the Project Faith site.   Additionally, leading up to Project Faith, they will be performing creative school spirit skits at the assemblies, selecting decorations and spirit day themes, and visiting classrooms to excite students about Project Faith. They have chosen a fun "prehistoric" theme for their efforts this year.   So, don't be surprised when you hear rumblings about dinosaurs when your student comes home talking about Project Faith or see a dinosaur roaming the halls over the next three months!

On Thursday February 1st, your students' packets will be distributed. JK students are asked to send out 10 letters, K - 5 are asked to send out 15 letters and 6 - 12 are asked to send out 20 letters.   Families with three or more students, should turn in a total of 40 letters. Student packets will come home with instructions and information on how to begin the VERY IMPORTANT first step in making Project Faith a success - the letters.  For those of you who are new to this process, you are sending letters to family and friends asking them to sponsor your students as they serve on Project Faith.   Letters are due back to school on March 6th, but you are welcome to send them in early.   Middle and Upper school students will have letter writing sessions during the day on February 15th and 16th.   On Thursday, March 8th, we will come together in the great room and pray over the letters before we mail them out all at once.

In preparation, you might consider:

  • Pulling together your Christmas card lists & other names and addresses of possible sponsors.  (A list of your child's previous sponsors will be included in the packet)
  • Making sure you have stamps and envelopes, it's not too early to start labeling and stamping.

Our goals for this year are to send out $5,000 letters and raise $200,000! The students were very excited and we look forward to a great year for Project Faith.

More information will be coming home and in emails in the weeks to come, and as always, if you have questions, we are happy to help. Please contact Development at 760-5200 x139 or email me at swhitaker@fcsva.com. Thank you for working with us to make this year's Project Faith the very best.
