Admissions: Assessment Info

Faith Christian School IN ROANOKE, Virginia: Private, Affordable, Distinctive

What can I expect from Assessments?

Junior Kindergarten: Groups of 3-4 children will be invited for a story-time and activity with our Junior Kindergarten Teacher at which time he or she will get to meet the teacher and new friends. During our story-time and activity, we will observe your child’s ability to listen to a story, follow simple directions, and interact with other children. This is designed for students to get to know the teacher and other students in the classroom, giving them greater confidence and comfort in making the transition to FCS.

Kindergarten: The Kindergarten assessment is designed to allow your student to visit the Kindergarten room and meet the Kindergarten teacher providing for a greater comfort level in making the transition to this very special time in your child’s life: The start of school! Your child will hear a little bit about what to look forward to in Kindergarten and then will spend some time getting to know his or her teacher through the assessment. You can expect the assessment will take approximately 30 minutes. Don’t be surprised if your child comes home asking if they can start tomorrow! It happens often.

We use the Brigance Kindergarten readiness assessment to discover your child’s communication, language, and social skills, fine and gross motor skills, and pre-academic skills. Some of the activities during their time with our Kindergarten teacher include:

 - Identifying their address, telephone number, and birthday
 - Following two and three-step directions
 - Drawing and copying shapes
 - Counting
 - Identifying letters

How do I prepare my child for the assessment?

Talk about their visit as a time to meet his or her Kindergarten teacher. Let them know the Kindergarten teacher will greet him or her and walk down the hallway to the Kindergarten classroom together, and that you will wait for them in the Lobby. The best way to prepare is to let them know ahead of time that they will meet with the teacher without you. Talk about the time at school as a time they will be able to meet their teacher, visit the Kindergarten class, and spend time getting to know the teacher. There is no formal “academic” preparation.

What’s a Shadow Day?

Students in Grade 2nd-11th are invited to shadow a student for a day. This day allows the student to experience what a day at Faith is like. We encourage visitors to engage in the learning by fully participating in the shadow day. We will partner your student with an FCS student, providing an opportunity to engage in the learning environment through participation in all classes, meeting other students and faculty, and generally getting a feel for the community at Faith. If desired, we can typically schedule assessments during this Shadow Day should a family choose to do so.

2nd-5th Grade Assessments

During their assessment time we will review math, spelling, reading comprehension, reading orally, dictation, and writing.  Students can plan to be with our teacher for approximately 45 minutes.  You can prepare your student by telling them this is not a test but simply an opportunity to share what they have learned about these skills in the school they are currently attending.  The assessment allows us to see the mastery of these areas providing insight into any transition plan for your child as he or she makes the move to FCS.
